I think the advances we’ve seen with computer vision technologies in the recent past have been fascinating and exciting. As a surgeon, I’m interested in how we can apply these technologies. As someone learning data science, I’m finding it very interesting and rewarding working and tweeking computer vision algorithms to seeing how that changes performance.

Now, I’m sure there are plenty of other people with a similar background to mine that want to learn how to work and apply these models. As with any AI project though, you will first need to find data!

Getting hold of medical data isn’t always a walk in the park. Medical data have protections due to their sensitive and confidential nature. Researchers from around the world have addressed this by creating some impressive open source medical image libraries. Just like the MNIST (Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology) dataset for numbers and letters, there are now some Medical MNIST like equivalents.

Here are 8 open-source medical image libraries that anyone can download and start implementing in their computer vision projects or for learning.
